Walk Week Seminar 2009

“Tips on designing accessible communities”
Friday 6 November 2009
Claremont Yacht Club

In recent years high vehicle ownership, urban sprawl and a preoccupation with the movement function of roads have lead to an increase in car dependence and neighbourhoods which are poorly serviced to meet the needs of walkers, cyclists, children, seniors and people with disabilities.

One of the challenges facing planning and transport in WA is increasing more sustainable developments and ensuring that urban developments make active travel including walking more preferable is a central goal of such developments.

Interesting quotes from Brett Wood-Gush's presentation:

  • "Never use the ord or talk about a 'road' in an urban environment.  It's called a 'street'.

  • "Spatial prejudice seems to be very prevalent in Australia."

  • "Streets can be your community centres."
