Walk Week 2009 Corporate Challenge

This year workplaces are offered the opportunity to register and participate in the Online Corporate Walking Challenge! Workplace teams of four can be created by staff members and will compete over a four week period to see which team can accrue the most steps, both in their own office and with other workplaces across WA.

Using your pedometer

Using personal pedometers throughout the challenge, each team's step total will be tracked on a public leaders board on the Walking Website. The team that has accumulated the highest step count at the end of the challenge will win a great prize pack, including a Bibbulmun Track package, a Heart Foundation BBQ cook book and much more!

Always make sure your pedometer is clipped to your waist band in line with your knee joint.

It is important that your wear your pedometer from when you get out of bed to when you go to sleep. The pedometer is designed to measure steps so please do not use it when swimming, cycling, dancing, or engaging in other physical activities.

You can also convert other types of physical activity and add these to your walking steps. Please use the conversion chart (pdf 84kb) provided to ensure consistency.

Logging your Steps

When logging your steps make sure you zero your pedometer after you have entered the data. The easiest way to keep track is to log your steps each morning when you get to work, zero your pedometer, then start again. This will give you a better indication of your progress.

The closing dates for logging your steps are in the table below:

Challenge dates Cut off date for logging steps
Week 1 12th to 18th October 5pm Wednesday 21st October
Week 2 19th to 25th October 5pm Wednesday 28th October
Week 3 26th October to 1st November 5pm Wednesday 4th November
Week 4 2nd to 8th November 5pm Wednesday 11th November

    • Positively increase the physical activity levels of staff

    • Improve office social interaction and teamwork skills

    • Encourage the implementation of an ongoing workplace walking or exercise program

    • Foster a friendly sense of competition and fun

    • Encourage people to think of the places they could conveniently walk to instead of taking a car.

    • Help people consider the places outside of a work environment where they might walk as a form of exercise

Workplaces are also encouraged to host a walking display or information presentation on the benefits of walking.  For more information, ideas and recommendations on operating a walking display, contact the Walking Unit, or download the Workplace Information Kit (pdf1.9MB).
