Country drivers

You must have a T extension on your driver's licence to carry paying passengers in a taxi. To be eligible you must:

  • be at least 20 years of age;

  • have held a unrestricted driver's licence for at least 1 year;

  • not be a 'provisional' driver;

  • be able to provide suitable personal identification (photographic evidence); and

  • be able to provide contact details for 2 referees who have known you for at least 4 years

You will need to:

  1. Complete an "MDL1 - T extension application form", which is only available at your local Licensing Centre or agent (phone: 13 11 56).  See Licensing current fee schedule.

  2. Complete an 'Application for Country Taxi Identification Card' (requires a passport photo).
    Note: If the licensing centre or agent does not have one, call 1300 660 147 to have one posted to you.

  3. Undergo a medical examination by your doctor; and

  4. Pass a criminal/traffic check which the Licensing Centre will conduct.

Once the above have been successfully completed, you will receive a letter that includes your T extension and identification card, making you qualified to drive a taxi in country Western Australia.

The application process for country taxi drivers is different to that for metropolitan taxi drivers.

  • To get a T extension on your licence, country applicants do not have to undergo the formal training, aptitude or registration tests.

  • Country taxi plates are managed under a different fee structure.  They do not incur ongoing leasing fees.

  • See the country plates information for further information.
