Safari tour and charter licences

A Safari Tour and Charter licence is issued for vehicles used for tour and/or charter purposes,  where some of the route is over poorly made roads and/or remote locations.

What criteria needs to be met to gain a Safari licence?

  • Vehicles must be four-wheel drive

  • Vehicles must have a Royal Flying Doctor's Service compatible, two-way radio or satellite phone installed

  • Vehicles must be road worthy and also capable of transporting passengers on tours and charters across rough terrain and unsealed roads

  • Individual fares should not be charged for charter arrangements.

  • Vehicles shall not operate from taxi ranks or be used to ply for hire or tout on roads or other public places and

  • Vehicles licensed to operate off road must be equipped with additional equipment to ensure safety. This includes
    • spare tyres
    • puncture kits
    • spare fan belt
    • jack and block or equivalent, eg. hi-lift jack or air jack
    • snatch strap
    • ‘D’ shackles and
    • shovel.

  • On application, you should take your vehicle to an Authorised Inspection Station for inspection. You must also bring the additional safety equipment and two-way communications system. You can find your nearest Authorised Inspection Station in the Licensing services section of this website.

What information will I need to provide in my application?

  • Year, make, model and registration of the vehicle to be licensed

  • Number of passenger seats

  • A brief outline of the services you intend to provide and

  • A Vehicle Maintenance Program and Fatigue Management Program for drivers should be attached to the application
