Existing E class learner permit holders can have their converted permit amended to allow them to learn to drive in both automatic and manual cars.

Learners must have the automatic transmission restriction deleted at a licensing centre or licensing agent and produce a further letter of consent (if under 17 years of age).

Learners who pass the driving assessment in a car fitted with automatic transmission, will have their licence restricted accordingly.

Issue of learner permits

If you wish to apply for a learner's permit for motorcycle or heavy vehicle licences, you are required to meet the eligibility criteria for that class.

Please note that these eligibility criteria apply to learner's permits only AND NOT driver licences. Requirements for driver licences can be found in the Eligibility requirements section of this website.

Applying for a heavy vehicle learners permit.

When applying for a learners permit to drive a heavy vehicle you must first meet the learners permit eligibility requirements. It is normally 12 months before you are eligible to get the licence class.

In addition to the new learners permit eligibility requirements, a learner can also receive tuition in vehicles that are covered by lower classes. See chart below.

Minimum standard assessment vehicles

When undertaking your practical driving assessment, there is a minimum standard of vehicle in which you can be assessed. The minimum standards for each class are outlined in the chart below.

R-N

A moped.

R-E

A motorcycle with an engine capacity of at least 100cc, fitted with a hand or foot operated clutch.

R

A motorcycle with an engine capacity exceeding 250cc.

C

A motor car with a GVM* not greater than 4.5 tonnes that is constructed or equipped to seat not more than 12 adults (including the driver).

LR

A motor vehicle that:

  • has a GVM* greater than 4.5 tonnes but not greater than 8 tonnes; or
  • seats more than 12 adults (including the driver) and has a GVM* not greater than 8 tonnes.

MR

A motor vehicle that has 2 axles and a GVM* greater than 8 tonnes.

HR

A motor vehicle that has 3 or more axles and a GVM* greater than 15 tonnes and must be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 16 tonnes.

HC

A prime mover with 3 axles and a GVM* exceeding 15 tonnes, attached to a semi-trailer with at least 2 axles, having a tare weight exceeding 4,500 kilograms, a GVM* of not less than 16 tonnes and a length of not less than 10 metres, vehicle combination to be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 28 tonnes; or

A heavy rigid vehicle that has three or more axles and a GVM* of more than 15 tonnes attached to a trailer, with a tare weight exceeding 4,500 kilograms, a GVM* of not less than 16 tonnes, and a length not less than 7 metres, vehicle combination to be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 29 tonnes.

MC

A prime mover with:

  • 3 axles and a GVM* exceeding 15 tonnes, attached to a semi-trailer and a trailer each having at least 2 axles, a tare weight exceeding 4,500 kilograms, a GVM* of not less than 16 tonnes and a length of not less than 10 metres, vehicle combination to be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 51 tonnes; or

  • 3 axles and a GVM* exceeding 15 tonnes, attached to 2 semi-trailers each of which have at least 2 axles, a tare weight exceeding 4,500 kilograms and a GVM* of not less than 16 tonnes. The minimum length shall be not less than 22 metres (a B-double configuration), vehicle combination to be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 39 tonnes; or

A heavy rigid vehicle with:

  • 3 axles, a GVM* of more than 15 tonnes attached to 2 trailers each of which has at least 2 axles, a tare weight exceeding 4,500 kilograms, a GVM* of not less than 16 tonnes and a length of not less than 7 metres, vehicle combination to be loaded to have a minimum on-road mass of 62 tonnes.

*GVM= Gross Vehicle Mass

NB: A "bob tail" prime mover (no semi-trailer attached) is not acceptable as an assessment vehicle for any class of licence.
