Renew your driver's licence

When you receive your driver licence renewal notification, it will state if you need to have a new photograph taken or not in order to renew your licence.

When a new photo is not required

If you licence is due for renewal and a new photograph is not required you can:

  • Pay via BPAY through your internet or phone banking facility,

  • Re-new online or

  • Pay over the phone on 1300 655 322

When a new photo is required

You must personally attend a photopoint location to have your photo taken. The photo on your driver's licence is valid for ten years.

You must present the driver licence renewal account intact along with primary and secondary identification to a licensing centre, licensing agent or Australia Post Office.

At least one document produced must have your signature.

Change of name

You must apply in person at any licensing centre if you wish to change your name. A change of name request cannot be processed at an Australia Post Office.

If you have changed your name you must provide a supplementary document such as an original or certified copy of a marriage deed or poll or change of name certificate. 

You will need to provide primary and secondary identification along with the original documents relating to the name change.

A medical examination is required when a driver reaches 75 years of age in order to renew their licence to drive.

A medical examination and a practical driving assessment are required when a driver reaches 85 years of age, to renew their licence. These are required to be taken annually after this point.

Renewals for travellers

If you are temporarily overseas or interstate (and you are a permanent resident of Western Australia), you can still renew your drivers licence. To do so, you will need to contact the Department, and ask for a Photo Kit to be sent to you.

If you are no longer a resident of Western Australia, you will need to contact the authorities in the State, Territory or Country where you now reside.

Forced renewals

If you are required to adhere to a forced renewal, the Department will state when you need to renew your driver's licence. This is usually because of a particular medical condition that you suffer from.

The renewal period can be between 1, 2, 3, or 4 years. You will need to pay the appropriate renewal fee and present any other evidence proving you are fit to drive as stipulated by the Department.

The renewal fees for forced renewals are different to the normal fees associated with a renewing a drivers licence. Please see the table below for the costs you will need to pay.

A photo kit can be completed by a person renewing a licence or obtaining a replacement licence who:

  • is temporarily living overseas
  • is temporarily living or travelling interstate
  • has a medical condition that would make it difficult to attend a photographic licensing site
  • is living in a remote area within Western Australia

You will need to provide a passport size Polaroid photo of yourself and a sample signature for scanning. The photo must be taken against a white background and must be witnessed by an Authorised person, who must endorse the back of the photo. The application form provides full details of requirements and includes a section for your sample signature.

Once you have completed the form and attached your photo, post it to the address shown on the back of the form with your cheque or money order (in Australian dollars).

To make sure you renew by the due date, remember to allow for sufficient postage time.
