Late vehicle renewals

From 4 December, if your vehicle licence is not renewed within 15 days after the expiry date, the law prevents you from driving it on the road.

However, you have up to 3 months after the expiry date to pay the renewal fees without the requirement for the vehicle to be inspected. The renewal period will be calculated from the previous expiry date where the fees are paid within this 3-month period.

Vehicle licence fees that have not been paid within 3 months of expiry will not be renewed and will require an inspection to facilitate a new licence being issued.

Please note that if you do not renew your vehicle licence within 3 months of expiry, you will be required to return the number plates to avoid a penalty being issued.

What is the difference between the standard rate and family rate?
  • Standard rate
You must pay the standard rate if the vehicle is:

    • Is used in par or wholly for any business trade or professional purposes or

    • Not registered in the name of an individual or

    • Not used exclusively for social, domestic and pleasure purposes

  • Family rebate

A motor car or motor wagon with a tare weight nor exceeding 3000kgs that is nor used for business purposes may be eligible for the family rebate. If your vehicle is eligible for the rebate this will be deducted from the licence fee under "private rate" and will be shown on the front of the form. Motor cycles, trailers, caravans and mobile caravans are not eligible for the rebate.Vehicle licence concessions

You may be eligible for a vehicle licence concession of up to 100% depending upon the type of vehicle you wish to register or, if you are a pensioner or a member of an eligible group.

Notice for concession card holders

If you are the holder of a pension concession card, please refer to your vehicle licence renewal notice to ascertain if you are required to present your card at a Licensing Centre or Agent prior to renewal.
