RST and the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)

The Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST), is the minimum qualification to operate a powerboat in Western Australia. Students who complete this ticket are able to demonstrate a minimum level of theoretical and practical skill in the handling of powerboats. The ticket is nationally recognised.

The WA Curriculum Council has endorsed the Recreational Skipper's Ticket under the category of Community Organisation from 2008 to 2012. This means students undertaking the program while in years 10, 11 and 12 can count this learning towards their senior secondary certificate – the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Successful completion of the program will provide three points towards the WACE.

For the Recreational Skipper's Ticket to be delivered in schools the Department's authorised providers must be used, a list of providers available to deliver this service can be found in the publications section.

If teachers wish to enrol their students in to the WACE system and receive validation for completing the RST, they will need to contact an assessor and conduct the following processes to ensure their student’s achieve the requirements of the WACE;

  • Confirm that the RST assessor meets the Department of Education and Training requirements to deliver the Recreational Skipper's Ticket including:

    1. Holding an RST Assessor number;

    2. Holding a Working with Children Check, if required;

  • Enrol students with the RST provider (the training establishment the assessor represents) who provides the school with a confirmation letter of enrolment. When forwarded to Curriculum Council, this letter will allow the school to enrol students in the RST endorsed program (CPLRST). The confirmation letter must arrive at WA Curriculum Council prior to the enrolment deadline;

  • Students complete their RST assessments under the RST authorised provider;

  • At course completion the RST authorised provider confirms with the school which students have passed. The school forwards this confirmation to validate the student’s results to the WA Curriculum Council prior to the validation deadlines. The RST authorised provider will also confirm which students have failed or withdrawn and no further action is taken in relation to their WACE.

    School teachers or RST authorised assessors who have any questions relating to this process are asked to contact staff at the Marine Education Boatshed

    Schools or teachers who have any questions relating to the WACE endorsement are asked to contact the WA Curriculum Council.
