Alternative transport

The energy intensive nature of transport activity and our heavy reliance on fossil fuels has significant economic, social and environmental implications for our community.

The transport sector currently produces 14 % of Western Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions; a greenhouse gas that is a significant contributor to global climate change. In addition, there are growing concerns about long-term access to oil supplies.

The Department is committed to addressing these challenges through the development of strategies in the following areas:

  • Smarter travel choices: Western Australia’s internationally respected Cycling, Walking and TravelSmart programs encourage people to use travel options that have a minimal impact on the environment. They also increase the level of physical activity, improve community interaction, and are kind on the wallet.

  • Smarter transport technologies: The Department is ensuring that Western Australia is well positioned for the rapid introduction and take up of alternative fuels and low/zero emission vehicle technologies. As part of this, the Department recently completed a 3 year trial of hydrogen buses. Find out more about the EcoBus Trial or sustainable transport energy in Western Australia.
