In 1999 Bikewest implemented a new initiative, the Behaviour Change tracking survey within the Perth Metropolitan area to monitor the public’s attitudes towards cycling and cycling behaviour.

Bikewest has undertaken this research, tracking key measures of awareness, changes in bicycle ownership, usage and attitudes among the general population to better understand the public's views on cycling issues and what entices people to begin cycling.

Hence the primary objective of this research is to monitor any changes in cycling behaviour which will assist in identifying additional strategies that will motivate people to cycle.

During 2009 the Department elected to conduct an ‘online only survey’ of respondents over the age of 18 that reside in the Perth metropolitan area in comparison to previous years where a hybrid methodology was used which consisted of telephone and online surveying.

This tracking study will be used by Bikewest to provide in-depth analysis of attitudinal and behavioural measures towards cycling to bring new insight into cycling motivators.
